Utensils

For the preparation of making your beauty products you do not need special equipment. The utensils you will need are most likely already in your kitchen.

Utensils needed are:

• Scale

This will be the best investment you will ever make. The best scale to look for is one that measures in ounces, pounds and grams to at least 2 decimal places for accuracy. It should also be equipped with a “tare” function(button) that allows you to reset the scale back to zero after each ingredient weighed if so desired.
• A blender or stick blender,
Used for preparing cleansers, moisturizers and lotions. A stick blender is easier to clean.
• measuring cups and spoons,
• a spatula,
Used for scraping creams and lotions out of your mixing bowl.

• stainless steal bowls or tempered glass bowls,

Used for mixing your ingredients. Stainless steal or glass bowls are preferred because they do not stain easily or retain scent.
• a small funnel,
For pouring cleansers, toners or less viscous lotions into narrow necked storage bottles.
• a small wire whisk,
For blending dry ingredients such as bath salts and herbs. It can also be used for distributing scents in creams and lotions.
• Clean Microwave or Stove top,
For heating up oils, waxes or butters
• Double boiler,
Used for heating evenly and melting oils, waxes and butters without scotching.
• Spice mill or Coffee grinder,
For grinding herbs
• Eye dropper,
Used for measuring drops of essential oils. Disposible droppers are preffered as they eliminate chances of cross contamination.
• Strainer or Cheese cloth,
Used for straining herbs from liquids.
• Clean Microwave or Stove top,
For heating up oils, waxes or butters.
• Cleaning items,
You will need a sufficient amount of paper towels, 20% bleach solution or rubbing alcohol and a good grease cutting dish washing detergent. Its advisable to have a pot of hot water handy(can be on the stove simmering) for quick rinse off of oils and waxes before cleaning.

Part of preparation is your final product packaging. For packaging your finished product you will need jars and bottles. For most products that you will make from this website I recommend the use of glass or plastic bottles with pumps. This minimizes contact with the final product.

For those who would like to turn this hobby into an income generating business, I would suggest having separate equipment than your usual kitchen utensils dedicated to making beauty products.

One very important rule of preparation to remember is to always make sure your equipments are thoroughly clean. In reality it is impossible to maintain a sterile work surface or area. Sterility is only necessary for making parenteral drugs; those which are inject able. Please refer to the paragraph below on how to clean your equipment in preparation to make your beauty products.

CLEANLINESS:

All utensils used must be thoroughly cleaned before use. To do this you can use a dishwasher that gets to a temperature of 150F or boil a pot of water and place your utensils in it. You also need to thoroughly clean your work space or area before starting to make your beauty products. You can do this by wiping down your work area with a 20% bleach solution (20% bleach and 80% water) or 70% rubbing alcohol (which can be found at your local store). You can also use these solutions to do spot cleaning of your utensils while working. Do not forget to thoroughly wash your hands before you start making your products.

If you intend to sell your products you need to use preservative(s) in your products for public safety. For your own home use you can omit the use of preservatives but your product will not last long. With this in mind you will need to store your final products in the refrigerator.
